Metallic exposed work covers
Posted by super from New York, NY, USA on January 23, 2009

I’m planning on using metallic exposed work covers for receptacles in an industrial facility addition that I’m wiring. I normally bond these covers but someone told me I don’t have to do that anymore. Is this correct?

The answer is “Yes” and “No.” A new sentence added to Sec. 250.146(A) of the 2008 NEC allows you to do away with the bonding, but only if the following conditions are met:

  • Receptacle must be attached to a listed exposed work cover,

  • Receptacle must be attached to the cover with two permanent fasteners (rivets), or have a threaded or screw locking means, and

  • Mounting holes of the exposed cover are located on a flat non-raised portion of the cover.
